The Bellagio Fountains

bellagio-fountains-night

Imagine standing in front of a man-made lake with fountains and then suddenly you hear the first notes of some familiar music and then the fountains explode into light and color and keep in time with the music you can hear. Well, if you are in Las Vegas then you don’t have to imagine it because you can see it with your own eyes at the Fountains of Bellagio in front of the famous Bellagio hotel. The fountain display is choreographed to various pieces of music, including “Time To Say Goodbye”, “God Bless the USA”, “Your Song”, “Viva Las Vegas”, “Luck Be a Lady”, and “My Heart Will Go On” among others. During the holidays, they are choreographed to our favorite holiday music.

Built in the 90’s at an estimated cost of $40 million, the fountains are set in a 8-acre manmade lake serviced by a freshwater well that was originally drilled to irrigate a golf course that no longer exists on the site. The fountains use more than 12 million gallons of water a year from the well and they incorporate a network of pipes with more than 1,200 nozzles that make it possible to stage fountain displays coordinated with more than 4,500 lights. There are 208 jets called Oarsmen that have full range spherical motion, 798 shooters that shoot the water upwards, 192 Super Shooters that blast the water up 240 feet and 16 Extreme shooters which blast the water as high as 460 feet. Talk about range.

While this is one of the most popular – and free! – attractions in Las Vegas, it also takes a well choreographed (pun intended) group of more than 30 engineers to run the fountain. Beyond their usual training as an engineer, each one needs to be a certified diver as well because so much of their work takes place under water. Plus they need to clean out the fountains constantly. Everything from coins to food wrappers and even diapers (no, we are not sure who is throwing used diapers into the fountains, but that is rude) have clogged up the fountains and they need to be cleared immediately. Many people also throw their wedding rings into the fountain (that is one way to show your love) and some people even try to jump into the lake – which we assume is from being over served at the surrounding casinos or maybe they are just trying to cool off in the intense Vegas heat. But just in case you were wondering, that is a no-no and the fountains will be turned off immediately so you will ruin it for everyone else if you jump in.

No matter what age you are, the Bellagio Fountains are a must see attraction while you are in Vegas. Shows run every 1/2 hour during the day and every 15 minutes at night.
